PORTUGUESE MULTI-RES SCHEME MAKES WAVES IN MODULAR

THE LATEST PROJECT FROM PORTUGUESE MODULAR SPECIALIST GOMOS HOUSING IS DRAWING INTEREST AS AN EXEMPLAR OF AFFORDABLE, HIGH DESIGN HOUSING THAT CAN EVOLVE OVER TIME IN LINE WITH CHANGING END-USER NEEDS.

The project is a large, multi-unit complex built in Portugal’s Vale de Cambra just outside Porto. It is understood the scheme’s client was looking for a fast, cost-effective building that could also be changeable over time, with Gomos’ prefabricated elements and modular system providing the solution.

Construction began recently on the 1,000-square-metre development and will take just a few months to complete. Comprised of prefabricated slabs and structural panels that support two storeys, the building will include housing units on the upper floor and multi-use spaces at ground level. Gomos System modules were used to construct the top floor, a series of single units with individual entrances. The modular housing system, made of concrete, also comprises acoustic protection between the individual units.

The bottom floor space was created to be flexible thanks to removable panels with inner rails that allow for distribution of water and electricity systems. The panels allow the space to be made larger by removing compartments, or separated into individual rooms.

The building’s adaptability is regarded a plus for tenants, but also a longer term boon to the building’s overall value. The creation of Portuguese architect Samuel Gonçalves of Summary Architecture, The Gomos modular system enables the construction of adjustable architecture in a matter of days. Inspired by concrete drainage pipes, the system includes segments of concrete that can be configured in various shapes and volumes.■
