SELF-BUILD STRUCTURE HABITABLE IN EIGHT MINUTES

Ten Fold Engineering: Folding beach huts

WITH THE PRESS OF A BUTTON AND A TRIP TO THE LOCAL HARDWARE STORE FOR A CORDLESS DRILL, THE FIRST PROTOTYPE FOR A HOUSE THAT PROMISES TO BUILD ITSELF IN EIGHT MINUTES TAKES THE CONCEPT OF PREFAB TO NEW LEVELS.

Offered by British-headquartered company Ten Fold Engineering, the structure features 64 square metres of internal space and can be used as a home, office, store, classroom or any other small building type. Inside, walls can be rearranged to create a layout that can either be open plan or compartmentalised.

It’s interesting to note that the minimum legal one bedroom apartment size in NSW is 50 square metres and in Victoria at present there is no minimum legal size for an apartment.

Ten Fold modules can be stacked and connected in numerous combinations to make structures with multiple storeys and interior units, and the ability to collapse them back down and move them by truck from one location to the next makes them a viable option for temporary offices, seasonal use buildings, and even disaster relief housing.

Even when folded, it’s suggested the buildings can store furniture inside them.

Ten Fold structures feature solar panels and bolt-on battery storage for those who prefer to live off-grid.

“The concept is simple: fold up the solid parts of a building to move it easily, then open it again wherever you want it to be,”
a statement from Ten Fold says.

“The components are modular so almost any arrangement of panels, doors, windows, and service pods is possible.”■
