NEW STANDARDS IN EDUCATIONAL ARCHITECTURE: TIMBER BUILD AWARDED

THE MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY INCUBATOR IN SYDNEY HAS TAKEN OUT THE NATIONAL AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL ARCHITECTURE IN THE 2018 AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARDS.

Designed by Architectus, the building comprises two pavilions, each with flexible layouts that can be adapted and re-configured as required.

The brief required a constricted timeframe for construction, which was completed in 37 days, resulting in a relocatable building that would accommodate the evolving needs of its occupants.

The jury’s citation described the scheme as representing a new and sustainable engineered timber prototype for portable educational buildings.

With the roof timbers presenting challenges to achieve junctions required between Glulam beams, TTW engineers determined the optimal solution involving internal flitch plates with steel dowels. Strongbuild played a major role in delivering the engineered timber structure.

The Macquarie University Incubator has won or been nominated for a number of awards and took out several Excellence in Timber Design Awards in the 2017 Australian Timber Design Awards program.■
