CASE STUDY: THE WOODSOLUTIONS MID-RISE DEMO

THE MELBOURNE-BASED WOODSOLUTIONS MID-RISE DEMO IS PROVING POPULAR WITH ORGANISATIONS INTERESTED IN PREFABRICATED TIMBER CONSTRUCTION METHODS.

Designed to demonstrate a variety of different engineered timber products, and the fire, acoustic, and structural systems with which they are commonly associated, the structure provides the effect of a static site visit. Totalling three storeys, the Mid-Rise Demo displays the systems seen in a timber building of seven storeys, with the ground floor representing the first two floors in a larger structure, the middle representing the next three, and the top representing the top section.

Beyond the selection of materials or the display of systems, the Mid-Rise Demo seeks to demonstrate the ease and efficiency of panelised timber construction. Integral to this methodology is the concept of prefabrication, a trend already popular in Class 1 residential and quickly growing in the Class 2, 3, and 5 sectors. Indeed, while a large portion of the Mid-Rise Demo has been designed and built to remain stationary (as per a normal building), the structure also features a dynamic component of unfinished wall panels, a floor cassette, and a mass timber floor panel. Designed for dis-assembly, this section can be pulled down and re-built by small teams, essentially simulating the onsite panelised construction process.

The Mid-Rise Demo is furthering understanding of panelised timber construction, specifically prefabrication, popular in Class 1 residential and growing in the Class 2, 3, and 5 sectors.

With timber systems well suited to both multi residential and commercial projects, the Mid-Rise Demo has been designed to feature a range of wall types and floor systems reflecting those seen on site right now. The structure features realistic
floor to floor heights of 3.1 metres and attempts to answer a variety of questions commonly encountered by the WoodSolutions Mid-Rise Advisory Program, ranging from how set downs can be achieved, to correct water-proofing
methods, to fire rating details, acoustics, and more.

Notably, WoodSolutions is committed to ensuring the systems showcased reflect a modern, best practice approach, and will update the structure with new products or systems when suitable.
