CIMC BERKELEY PROJECT A US FIRST

US: CHINESE MODULAR GIANT CIMC MODULAR BUILDING SYSTEMS IS MAKING INROADS INTO THE US MARKET FOR PREFAB STEEL STRUCTURES WITH A STUDENT ACCOMMODATION SCHEME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY.

CIMC provided the modules for a prefabricated steel structure to accommodate its post graduate students, which opened late September. The accommodation, constructed using containerised modules, comprises 22 units, with rooms on the first floor specifically designed for people with disabilities.

It is understood the scheme used environmentally friendly materials throughout the construction, in line with the university’s stringent green architecture standards, which restrict the emission of harmful substances. CIMC has also raised the earthquake resistance level of the structure as California lies in a seismic zone, with its earthquake fortification intensity reaching E level.

Modules were transported to the port of Oakland and then transferred to site by road for assembly, which was completed in a one-week timeframe. This is CIMC’s first project in the US, and also the country’s first Chinese-made steel structure module building.

Marco Ma, regional project manager of North America at CIMC MBS reportedly commented: “The successful operation of the project means that we have received recognition from our US customers and this is of great significance to our further exploration in the US market.”■
