3VIMA acquires LUTYEN 3D printer for NSW construction projects

Sydney-based startup 3VIMA, specialising in 3D concrete printing and robotic systems for construction, has purchased the Platypus X4 Special Edition 3D printer from Melbourne company LUTYEN. The printer, designed to produce structures up to eight metres wide and four metres high in a single setup, aligns with 3VIMA’s goal to streamline construction processes and reduce costs.

The Platypus X4 offers mobility and quick onsite setup, reducing project delays and labour requirements. “We searched across the world for the best technology in the 3D printing space only to find it right here in Melbourne,” said Jai Ranganathan, 3VIMA’s founder and CEO. He added that choosing a local supplier like LUTYEN ensured lower transport costs and reliable service.

“The design of the X4 Special Edition is exceptional, as it has the capacity to do an entire house in a single print setup, it takes less than two hours to assemble on-site. We will be able to run the printer in shifts around the clock, with extremely low noise factor, which can become a huge advantage when we operate with neighbours around.”

Ahmed Mahil, cofounder of LUTYEN, noted the role of their printer, combined with their proprietary concrete mix, in supporting hybrid building methods. The first major project for the new technology will be the construction of a cottage-style resort in the Blue Mountains, where the printer’s quiet operation is expected to minimise disruptions in residential areas.

By using 3D printing, 3VIMA aims to address the housing shortage and construction inefficiencies in Australia.
