ABB Robotics formalises agreement with ADMARES for Queensland modular construction factory

ADMARES Queensland factory to deliver modular housing at automotive-scale production levels.

ADMARES has entered into a formal agreement with ABB Robotics, confirming ABB’s role as a core automation partner in the delivery of an AI-enabled modular construction factory planned for South East Queensland.

The agreement establishes ABB Robotics as a key supplier of robotics systems, AI-enabled software and supporting hardware across ADMARES’ production platforms. The collaboration is structured around embedding automation within a defined manufacturing environment, rather than applying robotics as isolated interventions.

Factory designed for industrial scale housing output
The proposed Queensland facility is based on ADMARES’ Smart Factory model, developed with engineering and consulting partners including Porsche Consulting, MHP – A Porsche Company, Siemens and EDAG Group.

The approach applies manufacturing principles more commonly associated with the automotive sector to residential construction, combining robotics, digital simulation and assembly-line production.

At full capacity, the factory is designed to produce approximately 13,680 building units annually. The number of completed homes will vary depending on configuration. Based on a typical assumption of three modules per dwelling, this equates to roughly 4,500 to 5,000 homes per year.

The facility is expected to employ approximately 3,200 workers, including around 3,000 production staff and 200 office-based roles, operating across three shifts.

Despite the scale of the workforce, ADMARES maintains that the model materially reduces labour requirements when compared with conventional construction. On a like-for-like output basis, traditional site-based delivery would require a substantially larger workforce.

Robotics integration across modular construction production lines

Under the agreement, ABB Robotics will contribute industrial robots, collaborative systems and autonomous mobile platforms coordinated through software designed to manage production sequences in real time.

The focus is on integrating robotics across multiple stages of modular construction, including structural assembly, materials handling and repeatable installation processes. This aligns with ADMARES’ manufacturing model, which is based on fixed production workflows rather than variable site conditions.

Brisbane Smart Factory to integrate robotics, AI and digital systems

The agreement will support the development of ADMARES’ planned Smart Factory in Brisbane, which is being designed as a digitally integrated production environment.

The facility is intended to operate on an Industrial AI Operating System, linking design inputs, production planning and operational data within a single framework. This includes:

  • AI-driven production planning
  • Predictive maintenance systems
  • Real-time digital twin integration
  • Data continuity across design, manufacturing and operations

ABB Robotics joins an existing group of technology partners involved in the project, including Porsche Consulting, MHP – A Porsche Company, Siemens and EDAG Group, alongside the use of NVIDIA technologies.

The agreement focuses on embedding ABB Robotics’ systems directly into ADMARES’ production workflows, particularly in areas such as module assembly, materials handling and repeatable installation tasks. Rather than standalone automation, the intent is to integrate robotics across the production line, aligned with defined manufacturing sequences.

Within that structure, ADMARES is developing a factory model where design data feeds directly into production, with outputs tracked and adjusted in real time. ABB’s role sits within that system, providing the robotics layer required to execute consistent, repeatable processes at scale, particularly where precision and throughput are critical.
