Reframe Systems, a modular construction company based in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States, has received the 2025 Ivory Prize for Housing Affordability in the Construction & Design category. The national award, presented by Ivory Innovations at the University of Utah, recognises initiatives offering scalable, practical responses to the growing housing affordability crisis across the United States. Founded in 2022 by a group of former Amazon Robotics executives, Reframe Systems applies automation and artificial intelligence to offsite housing construction. The company operates a decentralised network of regional microfactories that produce modular housing components, which are then delivered and assembled on-site. The approach is designed to reduce timelines, lower costs, and provide greater control over the production process.

Microfactories built for rapid regional deployment
Reframe’s system is structured around microfactories that can be established and made operational within 100 days. Each facility manages the full scope of delivery—from architecture and engineering to permitting, fabrication, and final assembly. According to the company’s microfactory overview, homes are designed to meet local zoning and climate requirements, enabling standardised production with regional adaptation. The company reports that the model can cut costs by up to 35 per cent and shorten project delivery by more than half.
Its Somerville facility currently supports projects throughout New England. By focusing on regional production, Reframe aims to reduce transport emissions and improve build certainty in areas affected by labour shortages and material delays.

Responding to disaster recovery in California
While the company initially focused on servicing developers, it has recently shifted its scope to include housing recovery in wildfire-affected areas. Following the 2025 fires in California, which heavily impacted Los Angeles County, Reframe began working with community organisations in Altadena to explore ways of delivering factory-built homes to residents displaced by the disaster. A demonstration unit will be prefabricated in Massachusetts and shipped to California for final on-site assembly.
The company will use the US $100,000 prize to subsidise the cost of one of these homes, intended to demonstrate the model’s capacity to deliver affordable, climate-resilient housing in a post-disaster context.

Sector recognition amid affordability pressures
The Ivory Prize, now in its sixth year, awards a total of US $300,000 across three categories: Construction & Design, Finance, and Policy & Regulatory Reform. Reframe Systems joins a list of recipients developing alternatives to conventional building approaches, with a focus on speed, scalability, and cost control. Its model reflects a broader industry interest in modular, AI-supported construction as a response to persistent housing supply constraints in the United States.
