Samara, founded by Joe Gebbia and Mike McNamara, starts production in their new modular housing factory in Mexico.
California-based Samara, co-founded by Airbnb’s Joe Gebbia and former Flex CEO Mike McNamara, has commenced production of their backyard ADU (accessory dwelling unit) units (commonly known as ‘granny flats’ in Australia) in a new modular housing factory in Mexicali, Mexico. The facility, spanning 14,000 square metres, will handle the construction of Samara’s modular housing units, complete with interior and exterior finishes. Once produced, each unit will be transported by truck to the customer’s property.
The company’s debut unit, named Backyard, is being produced in studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts, with plans to introduce a larger two-bedroom variant soon. Samara highlights that the unit can be installed in as little as seven months, including the time for obtaining permits, with 30 days of on-site labour. Currently, the unit is available for purchase in California.
