Offsite construction industry group publishes guide to maximise Playbook outcomes.

The UK’s Government’s commitment to MMC (modern methods of construction) and offsite construction is now embedded in their roadmap to 2050 net-zero carbon, and as a consequence, their offsite construction industry is growing exponentially year-on-year. (Buildoffsite Playbook)

In 2021 a taskforce designed to stimulate house building using MMC was backed by £10m of government funding was announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak.

The taskforce was established by the housing ministry with £10m of “seed funding”, designed to “accelerate the delivery of MMC homes in the UK”.

The document said the body will “consist of world-leading experts from across government and industry” and be designed to “fast-track” the adoption of modern methods of construction

UK offsite construction industry organisation, Buildoffsite, in repsonse, have published a guide, to explore how offsite construction can lead the way in meeting the Government’s ambitious plans and policies established in their construction Playbook.

Published in December 2020, sets out what needs to be done to drive the future of public sector construction contracts through improved health, safety and wellbeing, greater efficiency, greener development and portfolio-wide approaches.

In effect, the Playbook policies should result in: more whole-life, outcome-based specifications; long term contracts; greater use of standard designs, components and interfaces; more innovation and use of MMC; greater exploitation of digital twins and collaboration tools; increased speed of project delivery.
