CHINESE COMPANY CIMC MODULAR BUILDING SYSTEMS HAS COMMENCED CONSTRUCTION OF A FIRST IN MODULAR BUILDING FOR THE HONG KONG MARKET.
The InnoCell project is a 17-storey residential scheme comprising more than 400 units. The first and second floors of the build will use traditional construction methods, while the remainder will use modular construction.
According to CIMC MBS, construction time for InnoCell is expected to be reduced by 30 per cent, with construction scheduled for completion by 2020.
Victor Zhu, general manager of CIMC MBS, reportedly commented:
“By building construction projects in Hong Kong, we not only show the local government and the local industry our unique advantages in modular construction technology, but also, we have become more familiar with the city’s regulations in design, examination and approval, acceptance specification.”
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor commented that the prefabricated building model would solve challenges facing Hong Kong’s construction industry, including the lack of construction workers, the need to improve safety on construction sites and the need for enhanced productivity.
Plans are also afoot for the city of Hong Kong to further drive the uptake of modular construction in other projects.

CIMC MBS completed construction of a display modular building facility at Zero Carbon Building designed to showcase the possibilities of modular construction.■
