Modular by SHAPE opens Perth manufacturing facility following WA education contract win

New 10,000-square-metre Hazelmere facility extends the company’s manufacturing network to Western Australia, with 15 modular classrooms scheduled for delivery in early 2027.

Modular by SHAPE has expanded into Western Australia, opening a 10,000-square-metre manufacturing facility in Hazelmere, Perth, following a contract award to manufacture 15 General Learning Area classrooms for the WA Government. The contract forms part of the state’s 2026 Mid-Year Modular Building Program and is SHAPE’s first award under the WA Government’s three-year Panel of Suppliers for the Construction, On-site Works and Transportation of Modular Buildings.

Manufacturing is underway, with delivery scheduled for early 2027.

From KL Modular Systems to national manufacturing network
Modular by SHAPE operates as the offsite manufacturing division of ASX-listed construction group SHAPE Australia, which acquired Victorian modular manufacturer KL Modular Systems Australia (KLMSA) in 2022 in a deal initially valued at approximately $10.7 million.

Peter Marix-Evans, CEO, SHAPE Australia.

KLMSA brought more than three decades of experience in prefabricated buildings, particularly education and community infrastructure. Following the acquisition, SHAPE established a second manufacturing facility in Adelaide in 2023 before formally integrating KLMSA into its national business under the Modular by SHAPE brand in May 2024.

The Perth facility becomes its third manufacturing operation, alongside Kinglake West in Victoria and Ottoway in South Australia.

SHAPE Chief Executive Officer Peter Marix-Evans said the expansion responds to client demand for integrated construction and manufacturing services.

“Our clients and consultants have been asking us to bring our modular capability to Western Australia because they see the value in working with one trusted partner that is both a head contractor and a modular manufacturer,” he said.

“WA’s geographical scale makes it one of the most exciting markets in Australia for offsite construction.”

Education contract establishes WA operations
SHAPE has operated in Western Australia since 1997, previously delivering modular health and defence projects supported by interstate teams.

Dan Courtney, General Manager – Modular WA, Modular by SHAPE

The new manufacturing operation is led by Dan Courtney, appointed General Manager – Modular WA in July 2026, bringing more than 25 years’ experience across construction, engineering and industrial services.

“Education is where Modular by SHAPE has built its reputation, and it’s the right place for us to start,” Courtney said.

“From here, we’re looking at opportunities across housing, mining, defence, commercial and industrial projects.”

The investment establishes local manufacturing capacity in a state with an existing modular supply chain developed through decades of mining and resources activity.

The Perth facility adds local manufacturing capacity to Modular by SHAPE’s national operations, with the WA education contract providing an initial production programme and opportunities to pursue further work across housing, defence, mining and infrastructure.
