Practical pathways to industrialised construction on show in Melbourne

Built Offsite and Master Builders Victoria bring industrialised construction into practical focus

Built Offsite and Master Builders Victoria will bring builders, manufacturers and technology specialists together in Melbourne on 4 September for a practical examination of how industrialised construction can be adopted across the residential building sector. Industrialised construction will be examined as a series of practical steps rather than a single manufacturing model at Practical Pathways to Industrialised Construction, an industry briefing being co-organised by Built Offsite and Master Builders Victoria.

The event will focus on how builders can progressively introduce manufacturing-led approaches into their businesses, ranging from improvements in digital design and production planning through to prefabricated structural systems, automation and robotics.

The program will open with Built Offsite publisher Michael Dolphin, followed by an official welcome from Master Builders Victoria Chief of Public Affairs Corrie Williams.

Frank Davern, Country Manager – Australasia at hsbcad, will examine the role of digital design, manufacturing workflows and integrated software in improving coordination between design, production and site delivery.

Davern works with Australian builders and manufacturers including Modscape, Drouin West Timber Truss (Futurefit), 5 North and Green Timber Tech, providing a practical perspective on how digital workflows can support more efficient offsite production.

Kerstin Gentle, CEO of the Frame and Truss Manufacturers Association, will then discuss the role prefabricated structural systems can play within industrialised construction, including their potential to improve productivity, consistency and construction outcomes.

Industrialisation as a progression
Keynote speaker Ola Skoglund, COO of Swedish automation and production technology company Randek, will provide an international perspective on the pathways available to builders considering greater levels of industrialisation.

“Industrialised construction is a journey rather than a single investment decision point,” Skoglund said.

“Much of the groundwork for successful automation can be done long before the automated equipment is in place.

“There are many practical steps that can be taken along the way, starting with better design integration, improved material flows and more efficient repeatable production details whilst preparing for higher levels of automation.”

Skoglund said the objective was to identify where industrialisation could add value to an individual business and allow offsite construction to develop at a commercially appropriate pace and scale.

The presentations will be followed by a moderated Q&A, refreshments and networking.
