Tasmania’s ModHomes program passes 280 homes with 271 more in pipeline

Tasmania is expanding its use of factory-built housing, with Podmatrix supplying the latest homes for the state government’s ModHomes Program.

More than 280 modular homes have now been delivered across Tasmania under the state government’s ModHomes Program, with a further 271 units in the construction pipeline.  (main pic: Podmatrix modular build ready for delivery.)

Housing and Planning Minister Kerry Vincent said modular construction was becoming an increasingly important part of the state’s response to housing demand.

“Modular construction is an important part of increasing housing supply and getting people into safe, secure and affordable homes sooner,” Vincent said.

The latest homes include units being manufactured by Podmatrix at its Bridgewater facility for delivery to Romaine, in Tasmania’s north-west. Thirteen units are planned for the site, with two already installed and the remainder expected to be placed in coming weeks.

Vincent said the factory-based model was helping the government increase the pace of housing delivery.

“Seeing the factory in action is a great example of how we can think differently about housing delivery – and, importantly, how we can get more homes on the ground faster,” he said.

271 modular homes remain in the pipeline
The ModHomes pipeline is also providing ongoing work for Tasmania’s modular manufacturing sector, with Podmatrix among the local suppliers producing homes for the program.

Vincent said the government had now delivered more than 280 modular homes across Tasmania, with the additional 271 units representing a substantial continuation of the program.

“Our Government has already delivered more than 280 modular homes across the State, with a further 271 units in our construction pipeline,” he said.

The Romaine project is one of the latest developments to move through the program, with the remaining 11 units expected to be installed in coming weeks.

“The modular homes being built by Podmatrix will soon be delivered to the State’s North West, where our government is delivering 13 units in Romaine,” Vincent said.

“Two of the units have already been installed, with the rest to be installed in coming weeks.”

The program also supports local construction employment, skills and training while providing the government with another delivery method alongside conventional onsite construction.

Vincent said modular manufacturing would remain part of the government’s broader effort to increase housing supply across the state.

“Every home completed is another place to call home for Tasmanians,” he said.

“Increasing our housing supply is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. The ModHomes Program is helping deliver that.”

Vincent said collaboration between government, manufacturers and the construction workforce would remain central to the program.

“This shows what is possible when government, industry and skilled workers work together to build more homes, faster, without compromising on quality,” he said.
