Victorian Government launches digital twin platform with opportunities for modern methods of construction

Access to Victorian Government digital twin platform set to revolutionise built environment for planners, engineers, developers and builders.

The Victorian Government has officially launched their Digital Twin Victoria (DTV) platform which is being built in partnership with Australia’s National Science Agency CSIRO.

According to Government sources, the platform is one piece of the Digital Twin Victoria program, a $37.4 million investment by the Victorian Government in digital twin technology and spatial innovation that’s helping to revolutionise how the state manages its built and natural environments.

The DTV platform brings together masses of 2D, 3D and live data in a single online place.

The opportunities Victoria’s new DTV platform presents to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are significant, as builders and developers can, in effect, virtually model site issues such as overshadowing and underground utilities, incorporate them into their BIM (building information modelling) files before any manufacturing or building works commence.

The platform features a suite of tools to visualise, compare and analyse spatial data, including to:

  • measure objects in the virtual world
  • explore at street level using pedestrian mode
  • use the timeline to see shadows moving through the day
  • save 3D data using their clipping tool
  • share views you’ve created with other users
  • use a slider to compare datasets

Digital Twins & MMC
The use of digital twins unlocks a wealth of insights for MMC users due to its predictive ability to ‘road-test’ solutions in the digital realm. More than just standalone simulations, digital twins are computational representations of real-world systems fed with data (such as Victoria’s DTV site), which can operate bi-directionally – monitoring operations as well as providing feedback for decision-makers.
