Australian Government supports Modular Wall Systems’ growth

Modular Wall Systems achieves $15 Million turnover amidst expansion.

It’s a story that underscores the opportunities that can arise from innovative thinking in the face of regulatory challenges, and how strategic support from government initiatives, like the Australian Government’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme, can facilitate significant business growth and expansion, as demonstrated by Modular Wall Systems.

Sydney-based Modular Wall Systems, a company that began as a solution to a local planning problem, has now reached an annual turnover of $15 million and expanded its workforce to 40 employees.

Founder Nick Holden initially faced challenges with his local council while renovating his house. His proposal for a brick wall with a rendered finish was not approved by the council. In response, Holden utilised his father’s manufacturing business resources to create a composite wall that resembled rendered brick, complying with council requirements. This product became the first in Modular Wall Systems’ range.

The company now manufactures various building products, including modular walls, fencing, sound-absorbing barriers, and designer metal laminates. This diversification has been part of its growth strategy, which also included participation in the Australian Government’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme through the Growth Services sector.

The Programme further supported Modular Wall Systems during its expansion to the United Kingdom and planned entry into the United States market in 2017. The government’s Growth Services Advisers Terry O’Riordan and Mark Stewart provided guidance, including facilitating workshops on value proposition and market access. This collaboration led to a growth plan encompassing website redevelopment, brand alignment, IT system consolidation, and international partnership plans.

Additionally, Modular Wall Systems engaged in a research project for testing and accrediting its barrier panel system, facilitated by Innovation Connections. The company also received support from the Australian Government’s Industry Skills Fund for a new plant layout project, significantly larger than the original facility.
