Oly Homes and PIQUE recognised for modular contributions with Awards recognition.
Two Australian modular builders, Oly Homes and PIQUE, have achieved recognition at recent industry awards for their contributions to modular construction. Through projects that emphasise design quality, energy efficiency, and innovative use of materials, both companies have demonstrated the adaptability of modular construction in meeting contemporary housing demands. Queensland’s Oly Homes received four awards across the Master Builders Queensland Sunshine Coast Housing & Construction Awards and the HIA Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Housing Awards. In Western Australia, Perth-based PIQUE was awarded three times at the HIA COLORBOND® steel Perth Housing Awards, focusing on modular and prefabricated home solutions.
Modular Builders Gain Industry Recognition for Design and Sustainability
The awards reflect an expanding interest in modular construction as a viable alternative to traditional building methods. Both Oly Homes and PIQUE have explored modular solutions that align with evolving housing standards, responding to challenges around sustainability, cost, and build efficiency.
Oly Homes Acknowledged for Sustainable Modular Housing
Oly Homes, based on the Sunshine Coast, was recognised at two regional housing awards for its modular designs, which incorporate features suited to Queensland’s climate. The company’s Steel Frame Project and Modular Housing designs were highlighted for energy-efficient materials, including advanced insulation and steel framing, aimed at enhancing durability and reducing environmental impact.
General Manager Steven Nousala pointed to the role of these materials in supporting sustainable living. “Our aim is to minimise energy use while maintaining comfort and longevity for our clients,” he said, adding that Oly Homes prioritises collaborative design to tailor projects to client needs.
Following their recent awards, Oly Homes is preparing for the Queensland HIA-CSR Housing Awards and has announced plans for a new facility to increase production capacity. The company is also developing multi-storey modular designs as part of its expansion.
PIQUE’s Award-Winning Modular Renovation Sets New Standards
Perth-based modular builder PIQUE earned significant recognition at the 2024 HIA COLORBOND® steel Perth Housing Awards, winning Modular and Prefabricated Home of the Year, the Peter Overman Award for Innovation in Housing, and an award in the Renovation/Addition category. The project, a modular renovation of a 73-year-old cottage in Mosman Park, showcased PIQUE’s ability to blend prefabricated elements with traditional architecture, resulting in a modern, functional family home.
Collaborating with Keen Architecture, PIQUE added three prefabricated pods to extend the cottage, maintaining its original charm while transforming it into a spacious, contemporary space. The pods were manufactured offsite and craned into place, minimising construction time and disruption for the family, who remained in the home throughout the build. This offsite approach enabled PIQUE to complete the second storey in just a few hours, keeping the project timeline under six months.
The design moved away from typical modular aesthetics, incorporating high-pitched roofs and raking ceilings to enhance the sense of space and light, which impressed the judges. HIA WA Executive Director Michael McGowan noted that PIQUE’s work exemplifies the growing potential of modular builds to address modern housing needs efficiently and attractively.
PIQUE’s success highlights modular construction’s adaptability and efficiency, particularly for renovations. This project also illustrates that modular builds can balance architectural integrity and rapid, precise assembly.
