BlueScope’s new light gauge steel manufacturing plant set to open in 2025

New $320 million factory in Western Sydney to manufacture TRUECORE light gauge steel and Colorbond steel rooftops.

BlueScope Steel, in a significant move, is setting up a new $320 million factory at its existing site on Templar Road, Erskine Park in Western Sydney, a development recently green-lit by the NSW Government. With completion anticipated in 2025, the new facility is projected to produce 240,000 new Colorbond steel rooftops annually, alongside 80,000 new steel house frames. Tania Archibald, BlueScope’s Chief Executive of Australian Steel Products, highlighted the market’s growing demand for steel building products, in particular, their light gauge steel framing product called TRUCORE, and also their range of products for roofing and walling applications.

The intention is to have the plant commissioned and operational by the end of 2025.

This facility, representing a major investment in the future of domestic steelmaking, will play a pivotal role in supporting housing and infrastructure projects. Beyond its substantial production capabilities, the development is expected to provide a robust boost to the local economy. The Western Sydney community will reap the benefits with over 300 new job opportunities forecasted. During the construction phase alone, around 258 jobs are slated to be generated, followed by 43 ongoing roles at the plant upon its completion.

Premier of NSW, Chris Minns, said, “This is exactly the kind of innovation we want to see in NSW.” He emphasised the factory’s role in bolstering the state’s domestic manufacturing capacity while also supplying essential materials to boost housing supply.

Paul Scully, the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, confirmed the project’s importance in supporting increased housing supply and stimulating economic growth. “It’s a vote of confidence in NSW, ensuring we have the locally sourced materials essential for building homes, hospitals, and infrastructure,” he added.
