Canadian Stack Modular targets Australian market with tailored steel modular solutions

Queensland emerges as a key entry point for Stack Modular’s expansion strategy.

Canadian modular manufacturer, Stack Modular, has confirmed its entry into the Australian construction market, aiming to deliver structural steel volumetric modular buildings tailored to local conditions. With three manufacturing facilities near Shanghai totalling more than 120,000 square metres, the company brings global capability to support demand across housing, care, institutional and workforce sectors. As first reported in Build Australia, Stack Modular has identified Australia as a significant growth market, citing increasing local appetite for modular construction, ongoing labour shortages, and the need for faster project delivery.

The company’s steel-framed modules—ranging up to 4.5 metres wide and 22 metres long—are designed to meet mid- to high-rise requirements. Modules can be stacked up to seven storeys without additional bracing, and up to 40 when combined with a concrete core. Engineered for extreme weather resistance, the system is suited to Australia’s cyclone- and bushfire-prone regions.

According to company sources, Stack’s approach enables projects to be delivered up to 30 per cent faster than traditional builds by combining offsite manufacturing with onsite works. The company emphasises cost efficiency, flexibility of finish, and reduced lifetime maintenance compared to timber-based systems.

Queensland has emerged as Stack’s primary focus, with a construction pipeline linked to population growth and Olympic-related infrastructure. “The big one at the moment with a lot of growth seems to be Queensland,” said Stuart Marshall, Stack’s Director of Global Sales. The company is also evaluating opportunities in Western Australia’s mining regions, where workforce accommodation demand remains strong.

With project delivery experience across 14 countries, Stack is positioned to support scalable housing and infrastructure solutions in Australia. Its standardised but adaptable system has already been deployed in locations as remote as Vanuatu and Kiribati.

Stack will be presenting at the prefabAUS Offsite 2025 conference in Brisbane this August, as it looks to establish deeper ties with local developers, architects, and government bodies.
