The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) will hold an online session on Wednesday 6 August to examine how modern methods of construction (MMC) are being applied in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia. (main image: Trudi Sully, Paul Tierney, Martin Fenn.)

Scheduled for 5:00 to 6:00pm AEST, the session brings together three speakers: Trudi Sully, Director – Industrialised Design & Construction at Mott MacDonald; Paul Tierney, Chief Executive Officer of MMC Ireland; and Martin Fenn, CIOB’s Chief Delivery Officer and MMC Oceania Lead.

Sully leads Mott MacDonald’s MMC and DfMA strategy across the UK and Europe and is known for her focus on platform approaches and practical innovation in the built environment. Tierney, with over 30 years’ experience in the industry across Ireland and the UK, heads the national body advancing MMC adoption in Ireland. Representing more than 80 companies, he works closely with government to scale sustainable, offsite solutions. Fenn, based in Australia, will contribute local context and outline how emerging approaches are being adapted for the Australian setting.

The event is intended for professionals working in development, construction, design and regulation who are interested in how different jurisdictions are responding to shared challenges: housing supply, skilled labour, and the transition to low-carbon construction.

With the UK and Ireland continuing to embed MMC through national programmes and procurement reform—and Australian governments beginning to integrate similar approaches at state and federal levels—the discussion will provide insight into what is being implemented, what is gaining traction, and where barriers remain.

“This is not about duplicating systems from overseas,” said Fenn. “It’s about understanding what others are trialling or delivering at scale—and looking at where that may be relevant or adaptable to our local context.”

The one-hour format includes a moderated panel discussion followed by audience Q&A. Participants will hear about current activity in the UK and Ireland, including the use of platform-based construction systems and regulatory frameworks that support prefabrication and offsite delivery. They will also gain a clearer understanding of how the Australian construction environment is responding to these developments.
