Clean Cube: world’s first prefabricated operating room opens

Prefabricated Clean Cube operating room with automated disinfection ready for patients.

A disinfected operating room is crucial for patient safety and minimising infections. And, a new system developed by Synergy Med, called Clean Cube promises to deliver near-perfect disinfection. But their story doesn’t end there, this operating room is also fully prefabricated with the promise of saving “construction dollars by reducing time, change orders and cost overruns”.

The prefabricated operating room was recently opened at the University of Rochester Medicine Orthopedics Surgery Center in Henrietta, N.Y., and interestingly, the hospital is also an example of adaptive reuse, having been a Sears department store in a previous life.

“The Clean Cube medical system is a modular pre-designed, pre-engineered, future-proofed clinical room/space with a universal, pre-templated design that supports efficient clinical operations and clean room components that promote the highest level of infection control.”

The prefabricated elements of the Clean Cube operating room were delivered to the site, assembled and installed in several weeks.

“It is composed of modular glass walls that are easier to clean than drywall or stainless steel, and hermetically sealed doors. All mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are incorporated into the walls and ceiling. Air handling systems tailored for medical use and automated disinfection systems create a sterile field of air around the patient during surgery.”

Development of Clean Cube’s prefabricated operating room was motivated by current CDC statistics that show that in the US, one in every 25 hospital patients will contract an HAI (Hospital Acquired Infections) and of those, one in 9 will die.

The new prefabricated operating room is situated in the Orthopaedic Surgery Centre, and completes phase 2 of the University of Rochester Orthopaedic & Physical Performance Center.

“The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) will be a defining healthcare project for the country,” says Scott Hansche, principal with SLAM, architect of record for the project. “From a former Sears department store to a world-leading surgery center, we are addressing healthcare equity gaps with quality design and innovation,” Hansche says.
