Drouin West Timber and Truss (DWTT) expands panelised manufacturing line.

DWTT is positioned to increase panelised production by up to 50% with addition of a Homag-Weinmann manufacturing line.

Based in Drouin, in outer Melbourne, DWTT have acquired the wall line of CSR Velocity’s failed early entry into the panelised offsite construction market. (main pic: DWTT FutureFit panels ready for delivery to site.)

The new equipment will complement their existing panelised Homag-Weinmann manufacturing line which was installed in their recently completed 10,000 sqm factory.

According to Peter Ward, Director of DWTT, the new equipment will “increase capacity by up to 50%”.

“We bought it on the basis that it will increase throughput, and we’re aiming to have the equipment operational by early 2023,” said Peter.

DWTT began as a sawmiller, a frame and truss builder and now, supplier of prefabricated panelised walls, floor cassettes and roofs supplying the builder/developer market.

“The increased capacity will allow us to take on more than one or two customers at a time, and the new equipment will also significantly improve delivery timeframes,” added Peter.

“We are extremely busy and we have at least 12-18 month’s work in front of us, so this new equipment will allow us to service that work sooner than later. Demand for panelisation is growing exponentially year-on-year, and with strong demand and many inquiries, you’ve got to be very careful that you don’t lead people up the garden path, over promise and not be able to supply it.”

“When we first established this business, we thought we’d sell it to our existing customers but soon realised that we had to have repeatability in our production line to be efficient. We progressed from individual houses to unit developments, and we’ve recently finished a 72 double storey unit project in Keysborough, 37 in Sunshine and 20 in Balaclava (Victoria).

And, we’re now about half way through our biggest project, stage 5 of a 10 stage project; a 250 triple story townhouse development in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

We are competitive on price, but what we do is save time by dramatically reducing the time to ‘Lockup’ to days. On a recent project the client acknowledged that we saved them 5 months build time, and that saved them $350,000. You need to look at it holistically,” added Peter.
