Burkhard Hansen, Director of CarbonLite, built houses to PassivHaus principles in his home country of Germany and throughout Europe. When he and his wife decided to settle in Melbourne, he worked as a carpenter and quickly realised the need for more sustainable and ultra-energy efficient homes.

CarbonLite now has two factories and employs 13 staff in Thomastown. They also manufacture a range of floor, wall and roofing panels made of locally sourced timber with glass wool insulation called PanelLite.

On hearing of their nomination as a finalist, Burkhard Hansen, said: “CarbonLite has been selected as a state finalist for the Telstra Business awards in the Sustainability category. This recognises the role that offsite and prefabricated construction can play in reducing environmental impacts both during the construction process by limiting waste and by precision fabricating energy efficient homes.

“CarbonLite is specialising in standardising PassivHaus homes so that they can be produced in volume to bring the cost down and make PassivHaus available for all Australians. As we face into an era of climate change it is vital that we reduce our carbon emissions; the built environment accounts for approximately 50% of emissions in its construction and operation, so CarbonLite has made the simple decision to aim for Net Zero carbon. Offsite construction is surely a key part of addressing the growing demand for houses, and delivering a new generation of low carbon homes.”
