International Code Council: offsite construction solutions for today’s challenges

ICC Primer on offsite construction codes, standards, and compliance published.

In a global drive to standardise modular construction, the International Code Council in collaboration with U.S-based Modular Building Institute have published their primer on offsite construction codes, standards, and compliance.

Although the ICC recognise that offsite construction is not a new concept, they recognise there has been growing interest in its expanded use due to various challenges faced by the building industry, such as workforce availability and housing availability.

And, they are positioning themselves to be firmly part of the global conversation to ensure the Code’s successful expansion and adoption, as they recognise it is essential to educate AEC professionals on offsite construction processes and methodologies.

The recently published Primer document is intended to, “provide information for code officials, manufacturers, and others on the various forms of offsite construction and their associated codes, standards, and compliance processes”.

Watch Ryan Colker, VP of Innovation at the International Code Council, discusses with BD+C’s John Caulfield offsite construction and the challenges it faces.

“Offsite construction can take many forms. When considered closed construction, the traditional compliance process through onsite inspections are no longer effective. Additionally, efficiencies may be gained in the approvals process for components that are repetitive or commoditized using product evaluation. Understanding the various approaches to compliance and how codes and standards address different offsite construction types is essential to facilitating new entrants into the market, building code official confidence, and safe and efficient deployment.”

The International Code Council and its family of solutions will continue to develop resources to assist code officials, manufacturers, designers and building developers in delivering safe, sustainable and resilient off-site construction projects that meet the needs of building occupants and communities.”
