New ICC/MBI standard focuses on MEP elements used in offsite construction

The International Code Council publishes offsite construction standards for MEP.

The International Code Council (ICC), a global source for model codes, standards, and building safety solutions, in partnership with the Modular Building Institute (MBI), the international non-profit trade association serving modular construction, has published a new standard for MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) elements used in offsite construction, titled ‘ICC/MBI 1210-2023, Standard for Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing Systems, Energy Efficiency, and Water Conservation in Off-site Construction.’

The scope of ICC/MBI Standard 1210 is to provide minimum requirements to safeguard public health, safety, general welfare, and address societal and industry challenges concerning energy efficiency and water conservation in offsite construction projects. It covers the planning, designing, fabricating, transporting, and assembling of commercial and residential building MEP system elements. This includes the componentization and modularization of MEP system elements, the incorporation of MEP systems into componentized, panelized, or modularized building elements, and the achievement of energy efficiency and water conservation requirements in offsite construction.

Ryan Colker, Vice President of Innovation at the International Code Council, stated, ‘The use of off-site construction is constantly growing and adapting, and standards like this help ensure that off-site construction can address societal and industry challenges. As a leader in developing solutions to support advancements in safe, sustainable, and affordable buildings, we are thrilled to partner with the Modular Building Institute on this project.’

The American National Standard now joins ICC/MBI’s existing series of offsite construction standards, including ICC/MBI 1200-2021 and ICC/MBI 1205-2021. Standards in the 1200 series address the entire life cycle of off-site construction projects from design and fabrication through approval and inspection.
