New sectors added to UK’s NHS Modular Framework doubling workload

Modular construction specialists vie for place in NHS’s expanded framework

The UK’s NHS (National Health Service) modular buildings framework is set for a significant expansion, with its coverage extended to new sectors, effectively doubling the expected workload over the next four years to a total value of £3.6 billion (AUD $7 billion).

The revamped framework will now include a hybrid construction/modular lot, with general construction works constituting more than £60 million (AUD $116 million) of the project’s overall value.

The framework is anticipated to attract joint venture bids from leading modular specialists.

The NHS Framework Agreement encompasses the purchase, hire, or lease of modular design solutions, catering to various specific needs including healthcare, education, residential, and catering sectors, as well as bespoke solutions.

In addition to the existing sectors, the lotting structure for the NHS Shared Business Services (SBS), which incorporates local authorities, will now introduce residential and blue light sectors. This revised arrangement is set to take effect following the expiration of the current deal in 2025. Since its launch, the existing framework has witnessed the withdrawal or collapse of eight firms from the original 29 selected companies.

Approximately 21 modular specialists are now faced with the challenge of retaining their places on the next-generation modular building framework for NHS Shared Business Services.

The lotting structure (refers to the way a framework agreement or procurement contract is divided into smaller, more manageable parts) for the NHS SBS, which also includes local authorities.

The new arrangement will come into force when the current deal expires in 2025.
