NZ offsite constructed house weathertight in 13 hours

An innovative offsite constructed house has been completed in less than two days.

A New Zealand offsite construction company based in Lower Hutt called Flexi House took just 13 hours from piles-in-ground to a weathertight building in July this year.

It’s a one-bedroom, two-bathroom workers’ quarters with an open-plan kitchen and living area.

The offsite construction of the panels in the factory took seven weeks and the fit-out of the building took six weeks, which included air tightness testing.

Exterior wall units arrived onsite clad, glazed and insulated, and the house can be configured to different sizes/formats by adding additional ‘units’.

Company founder and designer Andre Heller said the first house was effectively a prototype build with no efficiencies of scale yet.

“When doing multiple projects at once these numbers will only get better.

“When we’re operating at scale and can deliver housing that quickly, it’s going to be game-changing.
There were many features that made the design and construction unique, he said.

“From its high-performance flexible construction, sustainable low carbon design, to its standardised building elements. that makes the system repeatable and therefore scalable for mass manufacture.”

The system is designed so the floor plan can be customised and rooms added or removed as needs change.
