Cubo Modular engineered bamboo modular homes with flexible configurations.
With addressing affordable and sustainable housing firmly welded to Australia’s national conversation, a Philippine modular home builder called Cubo Modular, is generating interest to build their iteration of affordable housing but, they’re using engineered bamboo. Cubo Modular’s launch modular home is called the Batangas (a province in the Philippines), and they’re leveraging engineered bamboo’s sustainability credentials along with flexible design configurations, accessibility features, and off-grid options to bring their iteration of modular housing to the Philippine market.
According to Philippine Government statistics, the country needs 1.2 million affordable houses every year until the year 2030 to meet demand, and at present, the country can only supply 200,000 houses per annum.
Zahra Halabisaz Zanjani, co-founder, Cubo Modular, said, “We clearly needed a way to introduce a solution that was not only fast but also took into consideration the environmental impact. So, in terms of how Filipinos received our product they would think of a Bahay Kubo [a type of stilt house indigenous to the Philippines] which most Filipinos are familiar with. But we have a perception in our culture where we see it as something that’s temporary, but what we wanted to introduce, and what has been our goal ever since is to build affordable or dignified fully functional homes, and it just so happens to be engineered bamboo.”
Cubo Modular’s bamboo homes have a starting price of PHP ₱699,000 (AUD $19,300), and their online configurator includes roof, cladding, doors, hardware, windows, bathroom options, and a host of other features.

They’ve also taken the initiative and can arrange finance for their modular homes.
“We’ve just launched our Kubo Batangas model and in our Batangas model, we wanted to make it as accessible as we can to as many Filipinos as possible. So, we’ve been able to partner up with the biggest banks in the country and we are offering home construction loans from seven years to 20 years,” said Halabisaz Zanjani.
“We’re actually at our fourth-generation design, and we’re continually improving. In terms of expansion, because there is such a great demand, and we’re only one facility right now, we’re looking to partner with strategic players, especially in regions such as Davao and Cebu. We’ll be licensing our award-winning designs, that are globally recognised, as well as our manufacturing systems that are state -of -the -art, and also, providing alternatives to the existing traditional construction industry.”
