Prefabricated home: starchitect meets online media entrepreneur

Renowned Australian architect collaborates with Pedestrian TV founder to launch prefabricated home

When two progressive thinkers collide, the result is invariably interesting and likely to gain significant attention for their prefabricated home.

For the last two years, entrepreneur Oscar Martin, founder of Pedestrian TV has been collaborating with multi award-winning architect Peter Stutchbury to launch an affordable, prefabricated, carbon-neutral and concrete-free home with the aesthetics and flexibility of an architect-designed house.

Their first prefabricated home is a 90 sq m prototype called OM-1 by Martin and Stutchbury’s start-up Dimensions X. It’s also been shortlisted for the NSW’s Australian Institute of Architects 2022 awards for sustainability and new houses.

“We’ve really tried hard to make the beautiful economical,” said Stutchbury. “That’s a very difficult thing to do.”

Martin adds: “We’re on a journey to create the world’s most planet-friendly sustainable architectural house.”

On the Dimensions X website, buyers will select their desired modules and elements that reflect their individual tastes, from the length and size of the home to the orientation, finishes, and placements of the doors and windows. A range of environmental add-ons will be available, from beehives and mineral pools to rainwater tanks and composting.

They’ve also avoided any concrete, instead creating a foundation using Surefoot Footing that allows buyers to situate the design on varying terrain with minimal disruption to the land.

According to Martin, once selections are finalized, the prefabricated home can be built in six weeks before being shipped directly to the project site for assembly. The company is currently devising a way to make it as easy as possible for a local builder to put one together.

“We’re filming a step-by-step guide and hoping that these homes are simple for any home builder to construct,” says Martin. “Almost like a piece of Ikea furniture!”

It’s constructed from cross-laminated timber (CLT), and the complete prefabricated home arrives as a flat pack on a single truck.
