Singapore to build an integrated construction park in alignment with MMC principles.

First modern methods of construction (MMC) integrated construction park set to begin operations by the end of 2022.

Singapore first announced their intention to modernise the construction industry back in 2016 with the publishing of their roadmap to drive productivity in the sector utilising MMC principles and methodologies. (main pic: Jurong Port Integrated Construction Park)

They appear to be achieving all their key goals, and now they’ve taken it a step further with the announcement of building a dedicated integrated MMC construction park.

It will be operational by December this year.

The intention is to bring together key supply chain players in the construction industry, making it easier for them to collaborate, as well as share resources and facilities.

It was announced by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, and the concept will be trialled at Jurong Port before authorities consider replicating it in other locations.

The BCA (Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority) will encourage greater adoption of Integrated Digital Delivery which allows for collaboration by stakeholders through digital platforms.

It will also push for a redesign of conventional contracts to motivate parties to work together, build trust and facilitate risk-sharing.

The BCA is also targetting to increase the adoption of prefabricated buildings using DfMA/MMC principles from 44 per cent currently to 70 per cent by 2025.

This means more offsite production will be done in a factory environment with greater adoption of automation, said BCA.

“We must do so. We aim to be less reliant on low-skilled foreign manpower, and really upskill, and up the value chain in construction technology,” said Mr Lee.

“Our latest move is to require all large building projects to adopt DfMA/MMC technologies from April 2022.”

The initiative will be further supported by encouraging more automation and robotics in the production of precast and PPVC (prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction) modules.
