Taking Melbourne-based Spacecube modular building system to the world

Spacecube’s unique flat-pack modular building system is positioned for growth.

When the pandemic arrived, it took just 15 hours for a team from Spacecube to assemble an emergency COVID-19 hospital. But, the challenge was, they’d never built a hospital before.

With Spacecube’s DNA in manufacturing customisable, transportable, and modular buildings for major events such as the Grand Prix, Mark Davies, CEO, knew his team had the tenacity and know-how to reconfigure their modular system to stay relevant and solve problems.

“We agreed to terms on Tuesday night we could build a hospital, and by Saturday morning at 6.30am we started; we finished at 11pm that night. So, in the space of 15 hours we built a 360 square metre two-storey hospital, and then over the coming days the fit-out team went in and ran oxygen lines,” said Davies.

When it had served its purpose, Spacecube recycled 90 per cent of the hospitals-built form and it’s now a community health centre.

It’s a story that underscores Mark Davies’ drive to push and explore the boundaries of what his unique flat-pack modular building system can achieve, and now, he’s launched a division in the UK.

“We launched the UK division in 2022, and the first module was rolled out in late June. We believe there are significant market opportunities in the UK, and then, broader opportunities in Europe for highly adaptable, reusable modular infrastructure.”

Spacecube has also caught the attention of Sydney-based venture capitalists, Taronga Ventures.

“Taronga Ventures are a fantastic partner. One of their key focuses is environmental, social, and governance (ESG), and they’re looking for innovative businesses that will have a significant ESG impact. And, certainly in our dealings with them over a few years now, we’ve absolutely had a great relationship with them being able to demonstrate the ESG impact that a product like Spacecube has.

They’re looking for innovative projects, innovative companies that can improve the ESG of the property sector.”

Davies sees semi-permanent infrastructure as one of the greatest growth opportunities.

“How organisations can solve projects that require [immediate] infrastructure and be first to market is incredibly important, and we believe that Spacecube has a unique value proposition to offer.

“Offsite construction has significant opportunities in Australia, and I believe the Australian market needs to adapt quickly to it. One the biggest barriers we have here is actually having an open mind on how offsite construction can now be premium,” concludes Davies.
