Tasmanian Government tender for modular homes to supply social and affordable housing.
The Tasmanian Government last week published their tender to help vulnerable Tasmanians access social and affordable housing via their ModHomes Program to increase supply.
The new program will see at least 200 modular homes built over the next four years, with a minimum of 50 modular units delivered per year. The modular homes will be situated on land owned by the Director of Housing.
According to a state government release, “It will integrate modular housing construction in the ongoing delivery program of new social housing supply in Tasmania using the unique benefits of this construction method.”
Additionally, the ModHomes Program is also designed to provide workforce training opportunities for disadvantaged young Tasmanians to establish a pathway for them to establish a career in the building and construction industry.
The Tasmanian Government ModHomes Program is part of growing national awareness of the important role that modular homes can perform in improving housing scarcity and affordability issues.
“Modular units have undergone significant advances in the quality of manufacturing over recent years offering contemporary design, sustainable features and finishes, and comparable economic life, compared with onsite builds,” according to the Tasmanian Government.
The ModHomes Program forms part of a commitment to build 10,000 social and affordable homes and units by 2032, which will be coordinated by the soon-to-be-established Homes Tasmania.
This $1.5 billion housing package is the single largest housing investment in the State’s history with a commitment to build 1,500 dwellings by June 30, 2023.
