UK-based modular construction companies win £22.8m hospital contracts

In a sustained shift to accepting the efficiency dividends of offsite construction, two UK modular construction companies are the beneficiaries of multiple hospital contracts.

It’s said that offsite construction thrives where there is repeatability, and that’s clearly apparent in the decision by two local hospitals based in the UK.

MTX Modular

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has appointed the modular construction firm MTX to build a 4100 sq m extension to the Crewe hospital’s emergency department.

MTX is to build a two-storey extension modular accident and emergency building for Leighton Hospital featuring treatment rooms, rapid assessment rooms, isolation bays, resus bays and a bereavement suite.

The £13m facility will also provide a dedicated paediatric unit and mental health assessment rooms, as well as offices and staff facilities, which are to be located on the ground floor.

The location of the project, next to Leighton Hospital’s existing A&E department, will allow the relocation of ambulatory care services into the existing footprint, creating an ‘urgent care village’ that will support more cohesive working and improve patient experience, according to MTX.

The firm is currently progressing enabling works on site and the scheme is due to be completed later this year.

Day Architectural designed the project, DSSR is the M&E consultant, and MDA Wirral is the structural engineer.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is developing a business case that proposes replacing 85% of the existing hospital, built in 1972.

Speaking last year, the trust said: “Leighton Hospital is in need of significant upgrade and renovation and is not suited to delivering modern healthcare services due to its size, layout and extensive repair programme.

“Rather than continue to spend considerable money to bring an unsuitable site to an acceptable standard, the trust is instead developing an exciting proposal for a new hospital that will replace 85% of the existing site.”

Premier Modular

Modular construction specialist Premier Modular has secured a £9.8m contract to construct a new unit at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey.

Under the contract, the company will be responsible for the construction of a 62-bed Priority Assessment Unit for the Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As the main contractor for the project, Premier Modular will be supported by strategic delivery partner Claritas Group, and the new two-storey facility will house 62 patient bays, nurse stations, staff rooms, seminar rooms, laundry, clean utilities, and kitchenettes.

The Priority Assessment Unit will be connected to the Emergency Department and will be equipped with medical gases, datacomms, security systems, CCTVs, nurse call systems, and fully integrated with the main hospital.

Premier Modular director Dan Allison said: “This scheme is ideally suited to offsite construction. It allows the Trust to meet an urgent need to expand capacity for emergency care and the development of a very constrained site.

“The new building will be located in a courtyard and close to the Emergency Department which will require careful logistical planning.”

Designed by BDP and delivery architects P+HS, the facility is expected to be completed in time for the UK summer.
