US: THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF BUILDING SCIENCES OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION COUNCIL (OSCC) HAS RELEASED KEY FINDINGS FROM ITS ‘REPORT OF THE RESULTS OF 2018 OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SURVEY’.
With the survey conducted to gain an understanding of how the US construction sector is using offsite building, its report was released at OSCC’s annual meeting held during the Building Innovation 2019 expo in January. A total of 205 participants from around the US answered the survey, encompassing construction management and general contractors (GCs), engineers, trade contractors, architects, and owners/developers.
The survey found that most respondents (87.62 per cent) indicated they had used offsite fabricated components to some degree over the previous 12 months, while 81.63 per cent expected to use offsite construction more often or the same amount in the next 12 months; Participants (who could select multiple categories) are using offsite construction for a number of applications: commercial construction, industrial, healthcare, education, multifamily, hospitality, single-family, and data centre construction.
The survey also found that although offsite construction requires higher levels of engagement, the increased integration and collaboration throughout the delivery process can result in higher quality and reduced changes throughout construction.
It also found that the primary benefit of offsite construction is a reduced overall project schedule, and specifically, the duration of the construction phase. Other benefits included quality of product and cost effectiveness. The survey also identified construction managers as the individuals most often implementing offsite construction. It also indicated additional education was needed for current decision-makers and owners with the potential to demand the use of offsite construction.■
