Victorian Government announces funding for modular constructed kindergartens

$14.7 million in funding committed to build four modular constructed kindergartens.

The Victorian Minister for Early Childhood and Pre-Prep, Ingrid Stitt, last week announced $14.7 million in funding to build four new modular constructed kindergartens.

The funding will deliver new kindergartens in Frankston City, Macedon Ranges and Strathbogie Shire, using architecturally designed modular construction as well as delivering a new modular constructed kindergarten in Altona North in partnership with the Hobsons Bay City Council.

It’s anticipated the modular built kindergartens will create close to 450 free kindergarten places to meet increasing demand.

Watch the Victorian Government’s explanation of a modular-constructed kindergarten.

According to Victorian Government sources, “They are constructed in a factory in sections known as “modules”. These modules are then delivered to the kindergarten site where builders assemble them, connect utilities and complete outdoor areas, landscaping and the car park.”

Constructing the modules in a factory minimises disruptions to the community and kindergarten by having the bulk of work take place offsite. This process can cut up to half the time required for a traditional build, giving children faster access to high-quality learning environments.”

As of 2022, 11 modular kindergarten buildings have been delivered through the Building Blocks Grants – Capacity Building stream.
